A second-floor balcony collapsed at a Bay Ridge home on June 21, and the residents were forced to vacate due to perceived structural damage, according to the city buildings department.

FDNY and Department of Buildings inspectors arrived at the scene to find a portion of the balcony had collapsed in front of the single-family home, located on 88th Street between Colonial and Ridge Boulevard. Both agencies reported no injuries.

A representative from the Department of Buildings said the agency’s inspectors were called to  conduct a structural stability inspection after receiving reports the home’s balcony collapsed and during their investigation found the cause to be sections of the wood porch were rotting,

There had been no prior complaints on the home issued prior to Monday’s collapse, though the property owners were issued a violation for failing to maintain the wooden balcony,  according to the buildings department rep.

The residents were temporarily rehomed by the American Red Cross, and have already contracted with a professional engineer who conducted further inspections Tuesday morning to determine what is needed to be done to bring the home up to code, the representative said.
