Every day is Independence Day in Brooklyn

Markowitz says he’ll ‘wait and see’ about giving back campaign cash from disgraced developer

As proud home to everyone from everywhere, where dreams are made and legends are born, Brooklyn is a place where every day is Independence Day. Here, freedom means having the chance to reach the zenith of your God-given potential on the world’s biggest stage. That’s why for me, Brooklyn is the greatest spot on Earth, and why people from all over the world flock to our shores. Every day we prove that it is not only possible for people from different backgrounds to live side by side — it is preferable. We demonstrate the true meaning of freedom, simply by providing an environment where everybody can live their lives to the fullest. It doesn’t matter if you’re white or black, Asian or Latino, Jewish or Catholic, man or woman or whatever. In Brooklyn, your destiny is yours and yours alone, nobody but you can dictate the course your life will take — that’s true freedom.

Marty Markowitz is Brooklyn borough president.
