Families in Fort Greene Park travelled back to the 18th century on Saturday to celebrate George Washington’s 284th birthday at the green space’s inaugural “Colonial Day,” and attendees say the bash was revolutionary.
“We had a great time,” said Judy Slatkin, who was passing through the park with her two daughters and stumbled upon the historic scene. “It was very nicely done.”
Slatkin says she and her brood had a blast learning to cook wooden-teeth-appropriate old-timey fare such as clam chowder and apple cobbler from sharply dressed re-enactors.
“There was a bunch of interesting cooking demonstrations, it was very funny,” she said.
The young history buffs also posed for photos in an 18th-century wagon and learned how to pen letters with quills.
The party was appropriately located in the park’s Fort Putnam program area — named for the area’s moniker during the Battle of Brooklyn.
