Kingsborough Community College’s series of free cultural events taking place on campus continues this month. Performances take place on the KCC campus, 2001 Oriental Boulevard in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn Community Wind Ensemble and Concert Band & the Kingsborough Musical Society Chorus present their free Spring Concert, May 4 at 3 p.m.
The Musical Society Chorus performs classical sacred music, opera and operetta, Broadway favorites, and American and Jewish folk music. The ensemble has given concerts at Kingsborough for thirty years and rehearses once a week on campus.
Conductor Mark Mangini teaches music at Kingsborough and performs as a baritone soloist. He is also music director of the Choral Society of the Hamptons and leads the Greenwich Village Singers in Manhattan.

World Music is featured in “Dub Is A Weapon,” slated for May 15 at 12 p.m. The group, “Dub Is a Weapon” boasts a smooth combination of reggae beats and catchy melodies. Sample some of New York’s best world music bands at these informal 60-minute concerts in the campus cafeteria.
Blues, jazz and hip-hop are spotlighted in a free concert featuring Akua Dixon on May 18 at 3 p.m. Cellist Dixon and quartet take strings in jazz to new heights, performing original and classic jazz compositions including a premiere of Dixon’s latest work.
This concert also showcases “The Hip-Hop Blues Project,” Dixon’s collaboration with top young string players from the tri-state area. Free tickets are distributed one hour before the concert.
