Latin fireworks

The Real Fireworks won’t be in the sky this Fourth of July — they’ll be exploding when Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postinos, La Cumbiamba eNeYe, The Quackatorians, and Cotito celebrate the sounds of Latin America at Jalopy, July 4 from 4-7 p.m.

There is a $17 cover price, kids get in at $8. All of the musicians will take the stage at the end for a jam.

Marc Ribot, known for his work with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and the Lounge Lizards, will play with members of his Cuban band Los Cubanos Postizos. The band explores the music of Cuban big band leader Arsenio Rodriguez.

La Cumbiamba eNeYe is a group of 12 Colombian musicians, playing their grandparents’ traditional music. The band’s instrumentation is made up of guitars, saxophones, trumpets and percussion. Band leader Martin Verjano plays the gaita, a long flute with a mouthpiece made from a glop of beeswax mixed with ground charcoal.

Didi Gutman, one fourth of the Brazilian Girls, will be playing with his new group, The Quackatorians. Juan Medrano Cotito is known as one of the world’s best cajon players, and often plays with Susana Baca.
