The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) opened two newly installed elevators at the Court Street station in Downtown Brooklyn earlier this week, along with other beautification upgrades.
The new elevators completely replaced the old system that had been in place for over half a century and were beyond use, according to a MTA spokesperson.
To maximize on repairs during the closure, the transit team made general renovations at the station including power washing the platforms, street stairs and mezzanine area, installing new lighting, painting the stairs, ceilings and railings and replacing the tiling.
According to Jamie Torres-Springer, president of MTA Construction and Development, the improvements aim to benefit riders who use transit daily.
“The completed work at Court Street demonstrates our commitment to maximizing the repairs made to our facilities during service outages,” he said in a statement.
During construction, the entrance at Montague Street was closed for 13 months, requiring travelers to walk a long distance to enter and exit the station.
Now with all the rehabilitation complete, Richard Davey, president of NYC Transit, says the riders can return to an improved station that can bring even better service.
“Modern and reliable elevators help us deliver faster, cleaner, and safer service to customers,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. “Thanks to new, modernized elevators at Court Street R train customers will benefit from a smoother, safer experience getting to and from the platform.
This improvement comes on the heels of other transit upgrades coming to the borough. Earlier this month the MTA announced they would begin installing accessibility upgrades to the 95th Street subway station in Bay Ridge.
