More than 1,000 school children received much needed school supplies — and had a blast while doing it — during a special “say hello to the school year” Harvest Fest at Paerdegat Park on Sept. 10.

Hundreds flocked to the park, which is at Farragut Road and Albany Avenue, during a day filled with games, food, face painters, storytellers, music, dancing and workout demonstrations by “Chunky Fitness” guru — and Courier Life “Woman of Distinction” — Liza Kramer.

State Sen. Kevin Parker (D-Flatbush), who sponsored the Harvest Fest, said that families truly appreciated the supplies that were handed out throughout the day.

“It’s becoming more and more important in these tough economic times to provide working families with things like school supplies,” Parker said. “It’s also a great for young people to engage in a positive experience surrounding the beginning of the school year.”

Parker said that 1,200 children received school supplies — a bookbag, composition notebook, pencils and pens — in their kit during the Harvest Fest, which was rescheduled from Aug. 27 as Hurricane Irene crept up the Eastern Seaboard. Each child also received a book from Rosen Publications.

The Harvest Fest was one of the Parker’s first public appearances since a judge sentenced him to probation for a 2009 assault on a New York Post photographer.
