These heroes got to have their cake and eat it, too.
A Brooklyn bakery made 600 cakes and distributed them to servicemen and women at the The Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System in Fort Hamilton on Feb. 10. Veterans said they appreciated the tasty little gesture.
“I thought it was fantastic, truly fantastic — the cupcakes were delicious, and I’m honored that you did a photo op,” said U.S. Navalman Gary Triana, who served two tours in Vietnam. “It was an honor to all veterans, and the guys were eating it up.”
BakeMeAWish.com, a Brooklyn baker and cake-delivery service, and veteran-aid organization Field Operations from Soldiers’ Angels provided the hundreds of personal pastries.
Soldiers’ Angels also handed out dog tags depicting an angel watching over a serviceman — something that struck a chord with another vet.
“You kidding me? It was really touching to know that people care about vets,” said Millie Gonzalez, who served in the Navy for eight years. “Everybody is so busy with their lives, for people to take time out and show support is really nice.”
Gonzalez said she has been stationed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Florida, and her birthplace, Puerto Rico — a time she described as being like a vacation. But not all of her time in the sub-tropics was relaxing.
“Being stationed in Florida was hard because there’s a lot of red necks, but you know, I’m a tough New Yorker and that’s their problem.”
