The Jewish New Year got off to a nutritious start for Brooklyn observers last week when the Shorefront Jewish Community Council mobilized a food distribution in Brighton Beach to mark Rosh Hashanah.

Volunteers and workers unloaded food parcels from a truck parked outside the Oceanview Jewish Center, handing out non-perishable and kosher food items to members and others.

Olga Dobrinina left with a smile on her face — and an armful of staples, including bread rolls and matzoh ball soup mix.

The group had a helping hand from Comptroller John Liu, who rolled up his sleeves and — true to pol form — pitched in with the unloading.

More than 1,200 underprivileged families and seniors received the parcels, according to the council.

“It was really uplifting to see people getting assistance from a local source in these hard economic times,” said recipient Arthur Solomon, adding some food for thought.

The drive was held in conjunction with the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.
