The historic Strand Theater will be renovated into a world–class home to the BRIC Arts, the company that runs Brooklyn Cable Access Television, an art studio and other ventures, and Urban Glass, the city’s premier glass craftsmen. The architects on the $17.3-million, publicly financed job are from Less Architects, a Brooklyn firm that designed the recently completed project at the Museum of the Moving Image. Construction will begin next June and should finish in one year. … Fort Hamilton: In a rare public appearance since his political career ended in alcohol- and lovechild-induced shambles, Rep. Vito Fossella (R-Bay Ridge) honored our pal, retiring Sgt. Major Juan Caez, for his service at the Army base. Fossella soberly hailed Caez and, more important, did not commandeer one of the bases Jeeps. … Bay Ridge: Assembly hopeful Bob Capano just may have found the platform that’s going to sweep him into office to represent parking-starved Bay Ridge. Capano is asking Walgreens to let Ridgites use the former Key Food parking lot on 95th Street and Third Avenue until the pharmacy’s construction is complete. … Manhattan Beach: Our pal, the queen of cream, Maria Campanella is hosting an ice cream-eating competition on the beach at Kingsborough Community College on July 25. With preliminary qualifiers newly added to this year’s contest, it looks like Campanella’s on track to separate out the true eaters from the chaff. After all, no one wants a repeat of Koabayashi’s July 4 screw-up. … A picture of Editor Gersh Kuntzman has not appeared on the front page of this newspaper since Jan. 12, a record. … DUMBO: Our pal, Tucker Reed, who turned DUMBO from a location into a community, will finally be shipped off to Baghdad on Aug. 1. Canines and their owners are invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of off-leash hours in Prospect Park’s Long Meadow in what is being called the biggest dog party in the world. She expects to have her second child in a few weeks and is leaving the corporate world behind (for now). … Prospect Heights: The Heart of Brooklyn, the alliance of the Brooklyn Museum, the Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Prospect Park and the Prospect Park Zoo, has a new president of the board — it’s Carol Enseki, the longtime prez of the Childrens Museum.
