Building Bridges fest celebrates Canarsie

John Salogub, president of the 69th Precinct Community Council, flipped a sizzling batch of hot dogs on the grill as interim acting president put more on to satisfy the hungry hordes.

The crowds had come to celebrate their community during the Canarsie Bridges Community Festival, May 16, at St. Jude’s Place behind the Hebrew Educational Society on Seaview Avenue at East 95th Street.

Young martial artists enrolled in the Society staged a demonstration as part of a day of eye-pleasing spectacles and amusements — from vendor stalls and games to info from grassroots groups about available services in the community.

Seven art-smart youngsters were also hailed with awards for winning an art contest organized by the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie.

The winners were: Lisa Joseph, PS 279, and Steven Edwards, Brooklyn Theater Arts HS, first place; Kimiah Williams, IS 383 and Alec Louis C. Candidato, PS 115, second place; and third-place winners Sarah Israel and Adah Aaron, both of whom attend PS 276.

Community leadership awards were also presented to Sylvia Whiteside, president of Bayview Housing Community Association, District 18 Community Superintendent Beverly Wilkins, and 69th Precinct Youth Officer Valerie Williams.
