Fire threatens Dutch Reformed Church property

Investigators are probing the cause of a blaze that ripped through a community building behind the historic Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church.

Officials said that the blaze was sparked on the second floor of the building at the corner of Flatbush and Church avenues late Thursday night. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses said that the fire seemed to be contained to the second floor. Pedestrians didn’t notice that anything was wrong the following morning when they spotted scorched window frames and burned refuse littered outside.

The community building was routinely used for meetings, a small soup kitchen and a gymnasium for congregants, churchgoers said.

The fire never touched the church building, which has been standing on the property since 1793.

Reverend Daniel Ram, the current pastor, was unavailable for comment as this paper went to press.
