Mary Madonna on procession through the nabe

The faithful flocked to the streets to hail their Blessed Mother as the Catholic Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows got underway in Carroll Gardens.

Worshippers stepped in line behind a parish consortium from Sacred Hearts-St. Stephen’s Church, the borough’s first Italian parish at 125 Summit Street, as it transported an elaborate statue of the Mary Madonna through the neighborhood – stopping for food and drink along the way – before returning to the church for rites and prayers.

The 60th annual procession was part of a four-day street spectacle, during which the church celebrated its 125th anniversary by hosting the Congrega Maria S.S. Addolorata and the people of Mola Di Bari, Italy, as they honored the feast of their hometown patron saint.

Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as the Sorrowful Mother, or Mother of Sorrows, are names bestowed upon the Virgin Mary in relation to sorrows in her life.
