It’s that boosting man of the hour, Borough President Markowitz, providing a shout-out to this year’s Youth Poet Laureate Ashley August. The East Flatbush native was welcomed by Mr. Brooklyn — and lauded as the second consecutive youth poet laureate to hail from our fair borough — at ceremonies held at Borough Hall.
Standing O pal Ashley replaced last year’s poet laureate Ishmael Islam.
On hand at the whoop-de-do on Feb. 6, along with the beep, were Michael Cirelli — executive director of Urban Word NYC — which oversees the Youth Poet Laureate program, and Onida Coward-Mayers, executive director of the New York City Voter Assistance Commission.

An Empire State of mind
Huzza, huzza, three students from St. Saviour High School were chosen to be in the Empire Girls State Program. Jessica Hall, Chelsea Miller and Pearl Nkosi, were the three out of the five high school juniors chosen out of 18 students to participate in the program that runs from June 30 to July 6 on the campus of SUNY Brockport in Rochester, NY. The girls will live and work with each other on programs that focus on leadership and government. The girls, as citizens of the state, have the opportunity to run for any office in their local government. Two political instructors work with the students and separate them into political parties. Completion of the program garners the girls three college credit recommendations.

Give it up for POWERS, Inc., for opening a new center that offers yoga classes, among other programs developed to provide assistance to victims of domestic violence. The classes are followed by Protection Techniques (self-defense), as well as job training, education, and mentoring programs.
“Our yoga classes are a critical service that we provide to victims of domestic violence,” Steven Walerstein, executive director, told Standing O. “We have skilled and dedicated instructors at our facility.”
