These peddlers cater to pedalers!
Cyclists from across the city descended on Park Slope’s Washington Park on Sept. 9 to peruse an outdoor marketplace hawking new and used bikes, parts, and accessories that pleasantly surprised shoppers with its inventory, according to a satisfied customer.
“I got a used Campagnolo crank set. I hadn’t been looking for it,” said Peter Yelton, who trekked to Brooklyn from the outer borough of Queens for the event. “I recognized that it was on sale for a lot cheaper than it would be at a regular store.”
The event was the second of two semi-annual flea markets hosted by New York Bike Jumble, which has organized the fairs for seven consecutive years. It continues to draw customers with its diverse variety of gear, which includes both used, beater bikes and high-end, highly prized cycles, according founder Harry Schwartzman.
Local vendors such as Dumbo’s Recycle-a-Bicycle also set up stations at the jumble, offering repairs and refreshments to attendees. And Schwartzman even got in on the action, selling collectible items including cameras, jerseys, and sports newspapers that went for between $1 and $1000.
The twice-yearly market was created to provide locals with affordable alternative transportation, according to its founder, who said this year’s event succeeded in that goal.
“Generally, we continue to be successful in our mission of getting cheap bikes out to Brooklynites,” Schwartzman said.
