Green screens: A guide to outdoor films in Brooklyn

Brooklyn’s outdoor film season is in full swing! Open spaces all over the borough are filled with film screenings, so grab a picnic blanket, popcorn, and maybe some bug spray to watch your favorite movie stars while under the stars:

Narrows Botanical Gardens

Narrows Botanical Gardens offers all-ages animated flicks and action movies every other Friday night this summer. Note to visitors to Bay Ridge: the New York City Ferry stop is just a few blocks away.

Rooftop Films

This outdoor film series focuses on independent films, offering New York premieres of Sundance favorites and a first look at upcoming Netflix films. Both free and paid screenings happen all over the borough. Bands play before each screening, and after-parties often follow the paid events.

Red Hook Flicks

The annual film series at the end of Red Hook is going back to the 1980s, with a lineup of classic flicks from the Reagan Era. Shows start at 8:30 p.m., but you should come out a little early and claim your spot on the pier, which also offers a great view of the sunset and Lady Liberty.

Summer Movies Under the Stars

This summer film series in Brooklyn’s Backyard, presented by Borough President Adams, the Prospect Park Alliance, and Nitehawk Cinema, focuses on female filmmakers, featuring three family-friendly movies written by women. Each night will start at 7 p.m. with music from local acts; the films will start at sundown (about 8:30 p.m.).

At Prospect Park’s Long Meadow (enter at Grand Army Plaza and Prospect Park West, www.prospectpark.org/summermovies). Wednesdays at sundown.

Outdoor Cinema

Gowanus bar Parklife takes advantage of its giant patio to screen free films every Wednesday night. Before each show is a “John Trivialta” a round of trivia questions about movies (and sometimes John Travolta).

Movies With a View

Brooklyn Bridge Park has offered its summer film series, with the Manhattan skyline as a stunning backdrop, since 2000. This season, titled “Better the Second Time Around” features audience favorites from the last 20 years. Before and during the show, Smorgasburg offers food and drinks from tents at the bottom of the viewing lawn.

At Pier One’s Harbor View Lawn (enter at Furman and Old Fulton streets in Dumbo, www.brooklynbridgepark.org). Thursdays, lawn opens at 6:30 p.m.; films start at sundown. Free.

Flicks on the Beach

The Coney Island Alliance presents its seventh annual movie series, presented on an inflatable screen on the beach. There are only three feature films this summer, but they are all blockbusters! Bring a beach towel or a blanket and find your plot on the sand — and if you get hungry, the carry-out food from the Boardwalk is just a few steps away.
