Two borough notables were hailed for their contributions to the business and cultural communities at the Brooklyn Historical Society’s annual Library Dinner on Monday night — even though only one of them showed up.
Supporters and members parted with big bucks to press flesh with greatness in a historic building on Pierrepont Street, which was a Red Cross headquarters during World War I, and which today boasts the largest collection of Brooklyn-related materials on the planet.
The man of the hour were Brooklyn Brewery president and co-founder Steve Hindy, a former Middle East news correspondent, who naturally toasted himself with one of his froth-crowned beers.
Guests also found time to regale co-honoree Milton Glaser in his absence.
The celebrated graphic designer created the iconic “I Love New York” logo and the “DC bullet” emblem used by DC Comics from 1977 to 2005, in addition to designing Brooklyn Brewery’s distinguishable green and black trademark.
Celebrated lecturer and author Carol Berkin was the evening’s guest speaker, but attendees received another bonus.
They automatically became members of the Friends of the Library, a group dedicated to supporting the work and growth of the Brooklyn Historical Society library, which was named a major research archive in 1993 by the U.S. Department of Education.
