They’re brushing up on the fundamentals!
Students at PS 310 collaborated with local artists to paint a vibrant mural that celebrates the area’s multi-cultural heritage and healthy habits, said a organizer with the arts group behind the project.
“The mural reflects a variety of youth voices and experiences, especially because the school is very keen on representing the diverse community,” said Ariel Estrella with the civic group Groundswell. “The whole process is centered around the kids designing and researching ways to represent their stories and these principles that promote healthy living and success.”
Groundswell and Councilman Carlos Menchaca (D–Sunset Park) joined forces to bring the project to the 62nd Street grade school last year.
Twice a week for three months, nearly two dozen students brainstormed ways to visualize seven “habits of the mind” — such as team work, taking care of yourself, and planning ahead. The design centers on a young girl reading a book surrounded by colorful thought bubbles woven together by vines.
The mural was painted in a heavily trafficked staircase to serve as a constant reminder of what students can achieve, but will also be used in teachers’ lesson plans to promote the arts. It’s a great way to spur the students creativity, said an artist who worked with the students.
“I think, above all, it reinforces the idea of enjoying education, enjoying school, and expressing yourself creatively,” said Sunset Parker Angel Garcia. “We helped the students form their design, but they were the ones that came up with images that will resonate with their classmates.”
